Tragedy ()
It is within our power to exercise intelligent and effective controls designed to significantly cut such environmental risks. A tragedy, unfortunately, has now called upon us to decide on the overall level of commitment we desire for defusing future Love Canals. And it is not forgotten that no one has paid more dearly already than the residents of Love Canal.
The tragedy of the commons refers to a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource (also called a common) act in their own interest and, in doing so, ultimately deplete the resource.
Traffic congestion is one of the best-known modern examples of the tragedy of the commons. According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, air pollution from traffic congestion in urban areas contributes to more than 2,200 premature deaths annually in the United States alone. As more people decide that roads and highways are the fastest way to travel to work, more cars end up on the roads, ultimately slowing down traffic and polluting the air.
Almost six and a half years after the Lockhart tragedy from an impaired pilot, a full four years after passage of our law to ensure such tragedies cannot repeat, now, the law is finally in full force. The FAA inexcusably delayed and delayed for years, even after we wrote this requirement into a law, which was explicit. Now, thankfully, we finally have action.
Iowa is committed to caring for our students, staff, and faculty. This is never truer than when tragedy strikes; be it a larger national or global event or a more local tragedy like the death of a member of our campus community or a natural disaster.
Even if you prefer not to provide discussion time during class it is probably best to acknowledge the event. A national or local tragedy can result in students having difficulty with focus, concentration, and motivation. Failure to mention the event can result in students becoming more upset or angry. If you choose not to devote discussion time to the event, you might mention to students that there are resources on and off campus where they can obtain support:
The dangers facing people on the move throughout the region revealed by the data were highlighted on 27 June with the discovery of 53 bodies in an abandoned tractor trailer in San Antonio, Texas, and the hospitalization of 16 survivors. This tragedy increases the total number of deaths in the Americas so far in 2022 to 603, and it serves as a reminder of the underreported migrant deaths that take place at the United States-Mexico border and throughout the wider region, and of the families left behind.
Effective communication between all parties is one of the most essential components of living around an active volcano. When Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines awoke in 1991, the entire volcanological community responded, thus averting a disaster like the Armero tragedy. Every day, we continue to learn more about the volcanoes of our Earth. Looking back into the past is another way to catch a glimpse of the future.
